ASHE COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Ashe County Sheriff deputies are warning the public about slowdowns starting today along a popular section of state road.

In a social media post last week, deputies stated that N.C. 88 East and U.S. 221 North would pause for "short amounts of time" temporarily over the next few months as time as road crews haul material to the bridge in Laurel Springs. These delays will occur many times over the next few months.

Deputies explained that the large parkway bridge in Laurel Springs has been under construction as they prepare a replacement. At times, the large items in transit would hinder Ashe County residents.

Materials for a "dry run" were set to be shipped to that spot this afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m.

Deputies urged the public to be aware of and expect travel delays from the Corner Market in Jefferson to the Parkway Bridge adjacent to downtown Laurel Springs.

In closing the post, the Ashe County Sheriff's Office said they would "assist in every operation as they leap-frog the materials. We wish we could provide specific delivery times and road closures, but they are limited to when the items arrive in the Jefferson area. We will try and do our best to inform the public beforehand, but we may also be unaware of the time period, materials will arrive before we assist."
