The day after Watches & Wonders is always a rough one. The night before, we had a fantastic party at Lucid Studios in Geneva, where the community came out in full force, and the drinks flowed. Afterward, the Hodinkee crew ordered some pizza to the hotel and stayed up late bonding before we all went our separate ways the next day. My flight was early and then delayed, not long enough to get any extra sleep but just long enough to be a tease. And then airport security (as always in Geneva) searched both my carry-ons because they were flummoxed by camera equipment. Then I see it. Something to make me happy. The Swatch store in the Geneva airport.

I’d resisted the MoonSwatch craze until Saturday morning. I thought about lining up on day one, way back when, and quickly realized I liked sleep more. Some of the original releases were cool. Heck, I even covered the Moonshine release in Times Square and was told that there were a few left and I could have gotten one. But by the time I found out, I was already home in sweatpants. That all changed on Saturday.

There were about a dozen people in line. One guy had a bunch of boxes open trying on the Swatch x Omega "MoonSwatch Mission To Moonphase" Snoopy in the original white and comparing it to the Swatch x Blancpain "Ocean of Storms" black diver. A few others were standing around waiting for their friends to complete their purchases, most of them grabbing the newer "MoonSwatch Mission To Moonphase" Snoopy – “New Moon” in black. Some guys were playing with the UV torch given with the purchases by the sole sales associate who was there to contend with a bunch of tired watch lovers hot off Watches & Wonders. One young maybe – maybe 16 – had dragged his family to wait with him in line and was thrilled with his black Snoopy.

When I got to the counter I asked if I could buy both. The woman asked if I was alone and (hearing someone else try to fib their way into a second and fail) I admitted I was and took the black “New Moon” model, which I figured would get worn more.

It seemed appropriate. Four of the 12 people on the Hodinkee team in Geneva that week got the black Snoopy MoonSwatch. One person— the ever on-brand James Stacey — got a Swatch x Blancpain black diver and immediately swapped the strap for a tan NATO.

I made my way to a bench to sit down and look at my first MoonSwatch and ended up next to a Japanese businessman who I saw was packing a white Snoopy away in his bag. I held mine up and gave him a little nod. We started talking, formally exchanged business cards, and that's when I realized he worked for a watch brand (I won't say who) and, like me, was just looking for something to make him smile before heading home. Turns out he was also a Hodinkee reader. I asked him I could borrow the watch to photograph and he graciously agreed.

I won’t go on much longer but after comparing the two, I’m still unsure if I made the right choice. The white model is unmistakable from a distance, while the black Snoopy is a bit more reserved – that’s more my speed. I also couldn’t figure out how to set the moonphase to something more photographic, but was too tired to read the instructions. As I gave him his watch back, another gentleman from Japan sat on the other side of me. He was also wearing the new Snoopy MoonSwatch, fresh from the box.
