The Northport Community Center held their ribbon cutting this week as they re-opened the center.

It had been part of the community for at least the past 70 years and was a favorite gathering spot for local senior citizens for their group dances.

But last summer, city council members discussed selling the center and park to the Beeker Property Group for redevlopment.

City leaders ultimately decided not to proceed with that agreement and decided instead to keep the property for city use.

Northport Mayor John Hinton said they will make good use of the center now.

“This building is approximately 70 years old and the property has never looked this good, as it does today, with all the renovations that’s been done. We’re looking forward to this being a great senior center, and we haven’t done as much for seniors perhaps as much as we should have but now they will have their home here,” Hinton said.

The city will take over scheduling events at the community center.
