The Erik Karlsson saga continues. On Wednesday, the Dallas Stars were the frontrunners for the Ottawa Senators' star defenseman. That have the cap space to handle next season's contract ($6.5 million AAV) and the $11 million annually, at a minimum, he'll get on his next deal starting in 2019. But the inclusion of Stars' blue-chip prospect Miro Heiskanen seems to be an issue. On Thursday, however, all eyes were back on Tampa Bay, as multiple reports had a deal nearing that would bring Karlsson to the Lightning. Would a trade have to include young star defenseman Mikhail Sergachev headed back to Ottawa? One thing to watch: Forward J.T. Miller, 25, is now signed through 2023, makes $5.25 million AAV and doesn't currently have trade protection, according to Joe Smith of The Athletic. Oh, and for what it's worth: Karlsson is now following Tampa captain Steven Stamkos on Instagram. Intrigue!

Erik Karlsson

Fascinating to see Ryan McDonagh signed to a seven-year extension by the Tampa Bay Lightning as free agency opened on July 1. The contract, which kicks in 2019-20, pays him $6.75 million annually against the cap, up from $4.7 million on his current deal. It gives the Lightning three defensemen – McDonagh, Victor Hedman and Mikhail Sergachev – signed in 2019-20. Which is to say it gives them flexibility with Nikita Kucherov needing a new deal and, as of noon on July 1, John Tavares still a possibility. But by committing $6.5 million to McDonagh, does that mean they're out on Erik Karlsson?
