The Leominster High boys topped visiting Wachusett Regional, 3-0, on Monday afternoon, by set scores of 26-24, 25-22 and 25-11.

Daniel Cantano led the Blue Devils with 20 kills, 18 service points, nine digs, two aces and a block, while Kevin Lee dished out 26 assists. Quinn Maher-Kellelea added six kills, three digs and an ace and Pat Kilduff-Pereire had two kills and a dig

Algonquin 3, Ayer-Shirley 2: The Panthers (2-1) won the first two sets before the Titans rallied with set scores of 21-25, 15-25, 27-25, 25-15 and 15-7.

Junior outside hitter Miles Pyatt had nine kills and an ace for Ayer-Shirley, while senior right side and setter David Batchelor had 12 assists, eight kills and a pair of blocks.

Fitchburg 3, Marlboro 1: The win puts the Red Raiders at 2-0 for the season.

Girls tennis

North Middlesex 4, Fitchburg 1: Rebekah Sylvester and Lizzy Holsinger won singles matches for the Patriots (1-0), while the first doubles tandem of Olivia Rowley and Ava Stuart cruised to a win. Hira Khan and Zoe Aster won the second doubles match for North Middlesex.

Khanchana Nanthavongas claimed the first singles match for Fitchburg.

Falcons split with Vikings

The Fitchburg State baseball team earned a split against Salem State Monday, winning the opener 8-6 before falling 8-5 in the second half of the doubleheader.

In the opener, the Falcons (6-13, 1-2 MASCAC) scored six times in the bottom of the sixth to erase a 3-2 deficit. Joseph Abt and Luke Sterner each drove in a pair in the frame, while Matthew Kelly had a single RBI and Liam Goldstein scored on a steal of home.

Abt (1-for-3) and Goldstein (two walks) drove in single runs in the second.

Joseph Stawski picked up the win to improve to 1-2. He went the full seven innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits and a walk while striking out three.

In the second game, the Falcons fell behind 7-0 before rallying for four runs in the fifth. In that frame, Adam Koza had a two-run double and Sterner and Abt each had an RBI.

Koza plated Jacob Hurrell with a sac fly in the seventh, but the Falcons were unable to complete the comeback.

Shane Daly (0-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits and three walks in four innings. He also struck out three.

Powers earns conference honor

Case Western Reserve University graduate student third baseman James Powers, of Leominster, was named the University Athletic Association Hitter of the Week after helping lead the Spartans to three wins in four games at conference rival Emory University last weekend, going 9-for-18 with a double, 10 runs scored, nine runs batted in, three walks, and three stolen bases on as many tries.

Powers finished the week slugging .556 with a .571 on base percentage for a 1.127 OPS, hitting safely in all four games and driving in at least two runs in each contest. He notched his 200th collegiate hit on Saturday, finishing the weekend’s action with 205 knocks. Powers had 167 hits as a member of the Anna Maria baseball program before joining the Spartans this season.

Powers leads all CWRU players with a .384 average, 11 doubles, 32 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases this season. This was the first UAA Athlete of the Week honor of Powers’ career.
