India’s hopes of a swift finish were thwarted as Joe Root and Ben Foakes showcased resilience after a promising first session. Despite England’s early struggles at 112/5, Root and Foakes formed a tenacious partnership, denying Rohit Sharma’s side the opportunity to wrap up the innings swiftly. Root and Foakes’ determined stand resulted in England’s first-ever wicketless session between lunch and tea, leaving India rueing the exhaustion of all three review opportunities within the opening 60 overs.

The first two reviews were utilized during Joe Root’s innings, with the final one saved for Ben Foakes shortly into the third session. Ravindra Jadeja had the England wicketkeeper-batsman under pressure, prompting an immediate appeal from India. Despite the umpire initially dismissing the appeal, Rohit Sharma found himself in the spotlight once again as he engaged in a prolonged discussion with the player before opting to refer the decision to the third umpire. However, the ball tracker revealed that although the ball pitched and struck in line, its trajectory down the leg side meant it would miss all three stumps.

Before India exhausted all their review options, while awaiting the ball tracking results, the camera repeatedly zoomed in on Rohit displayed on the big screen. This caused the captain to become visibly agitated, prompting him to gesture towards the screen, urging the cameraman to focus on the DRS process rather than him—reminiscent of a similar incident during last year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Interestingly, right after Rohit made this gesture, the ball tracker finally appeared on screen.

After Ben Foakes survived, Sunil Gavaskar clearly referred to it as a bad DRS call, he said

“Not the best of referrals. Rohit wasn’t keen. It was pretty much like he was forced into it. There was just a hint of turn, the batter would have been in trouble but the ball went straight through. Didn’t even hit the back pad; just hit the front pad,” Gavaskar said on air.

“All reviews are lost now. Bowlers do get excited; I can understand. They want a wicket, but they (others) have got to realise where it was that the ball hit. You want to be sure at least that if it doesn’t go your way, they should get the benefit of the umpire’s call. Then it’s fine. You don’t lose the review; here you’ve lost the review.”
