The power entity Centlec urges residents to refrain from working on or interfering with any equipment or network infrastructure without prior authorization, as it is illegal, unsafe and regarded as vandalism.

Centlec referred to Mangaung’s electricity by-laws in Sections 44 (1), 46 and 47 to emphasise the importance of refraining from illegal activities within the metro.

“No person other than a person specifically authorised thereto by the service provider in writing, shall directly or indirectly connect, attempt to connect or cause or permit to be connected any electrical installation or part thereof to the supply mains or service connection,” phrased Centlec.

Furthermore, Centlec added that according to Section 3 of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act, any unlawful and intentional tampering with any of the equipment or network infrastructure could result in serious consequences that may include the imposition of a “severe penalty, namely imprisonment which may be up to 30 years or, in the case of a corporate body, a fine not exceeding R100 million.”
