Dr. O. Jerome Green, president of Shorter College in North Little Rock, passed away Monday (April 8), according to a press release from the school.

Green, 69, was appointed as the 45th president of Shorter College in 2012. He previously served at Miles College and served on the Arkansas Ethics Commission.

“President Green’s passing is a tremendous loss, not only for Shorter College, but to the African Methodist Episcopal Church and the HBCU community. He was a great leader who cared deeply about students, faculty and staff,” said Shorter College Provost and Vice President for Administration Jeffery Norflett. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family.”

Green earned his Juris Doctor at the UA Little Rock Bowen School of Law, a Master of Arts in Journalism at The Ohio State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature from Miles College.

Green had a distinguished career in higher education, economic development, and business and litigation consulting.

Under his administration at Shorter College, there were record breaking enrollment and graduates, new academic programs, and the establishment of the STEM Center for Academic Excellence.

Details for memorial services have not been disclosed.

Shorter College is a private, faith-based two-year liberal arts college located in North Little Rock. It was founded in 1886 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

It is one of the nation’s 110 Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
