Software Engineer - Site Reliability
We’re looking for a software engineer to help us manage, maintain and monitor all aspects of the Flipboard production environment. Our environment is a modern combination of application stacks and data stores including HBase, ElasticSearch, and MySQL all within Amazon Web Services. You’ll be challenged dealing with the growth of a highly trafficked mobile application coupled with services that consume the world of content daily.
Ensure the reliable operation of our large scale services built using open source technologies including MySQL, Hadoop, HBase, ElasticSearch, memcached, Redis, and Haproxy all within Amazon Web Services
Build operational automation and developer tools to help us move faster
Participate in the research, design, and implementation of new technologies for scaling our growing data sets and processing pipelines
Continue to build runbooks that assist in monitoring that you eventually replace with automated remediation
Fluent with advanced shell scripting plus another scripting language such as Python or Ruby
Experience using and automating in a fully Amazon Web Services environment
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills in a Linux environment
Familiarity with relational databases such as MySQL and distributed data stores
Experience with performance tuning and system load monitoring and diagnostics
Organized, good attention to details, and able to work independently
Excellent communications skills

You believe in automating and measuring everything -- metrics and improving them drives you
You're a fan of automated remediation and predictive analytics for failures -- solve problems before they happen
You're either familiar with or want to learn to run HBase operationally
You believe in tooks like Puppet and Chef (Ansible and SaltStack also) -- we're a Puppet shop
You've worked with or want to learn how to build real-time data pipelines using open source projects like Kafka and Storm
