Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will only attend proposed peace talks if Russian President Vladimir Putin is present, to ensure the Kremlin is serious about a ceasefire. The statement came as US President Donald Trump offered to travel to Istanbul for the meeting, which has become a focus of renewed diplomatic efforts. Putin has not confirmed whether he will attend, and Trump, who is currently on a trip in the Middle East, said he'll attend if he believes progress is possible. Ending the war is Trump's top foreign policy priority, but he's warned that he will abandon peace efforts if a breakthrough doesn't happen soon. Ukrainian officials have said that Zelenskyy will not meet with any Russian representatives other than Putin. Ukraine’s European allies support this position. Meanwhile, Russia has said that it is still open to a long-term peace deal, but rejected Ukraine's demand for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire. The divide between the two sides is significant, with Ukraine refusing to accept military limits or abandon its NATO ambitions. Russia continues to push for terms similar to a 2022 draft agreement, in which Ukraine would adopt neutrality in exchange for security guarantees from UN Security Council members. Currently, Russia controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea and large portions of Donetsk, Luhansk, and other regions in the east and south.
