Amazon Clarifies It Won’t Show Tariff Charges Next To Prices
A reported plan for Amazon to display tariff costs beside product prices has prompted immediate and sharp criticism from the Trump administration. Punchbowl News reported Amazon would show how much tariffs contributed to prices, citing “a source familiar with the matter.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the alleged plan “a hostile and political act” and accused Amazon of partnering with “a Chinese propaganda arm.” President Donald Trump reportedly called Jeff Bezos to complain but later told reporters, “Jeff Bezos was very nice… He solved a problem very quickly.” Amazon quickly issued a statement denying the claim, clarifying that while its Haul storefront “considered the idea,” it “was never approved and is not going to happen.” Rob Lalka, a professor at Tulane University’s Freeman School of Business, said the White House’s response reflected fear of “redirecting customer frustration” toward government tariffs. Lalka added that “companies are always communicating something with us whenever they are putting things in their receipt.” Rivals like Temu and Shein now include tariff-related charges in pricing or checkout messaging, signaling how trade policy is increasingly visible in everyday shopping experiences.
