Dramatic moment derelict builder’s yard goes up in flames
Dramatic footage shows the moment a former builder's yard was completely engulfed in flames - just metres away from neighbours homes. Eight fire engines were called to the derelict merchant’s site off Spring Vale in Greenhithe, Kent, just after 7pm on Wednesday (April 23). Crews used main jets to extinguish the flames, which had been put out by 1.17am yesterday morning (April 24). Police were also in attendance and there were no reported injuries. Video footage captured at the height of the blaze shows flames engulfing a derelict outbuilding surrounded by overgrown scrubland behind the quiet cul-de-sac. The fire happened just metres from the garden fences of terraced homes. Neighbours reported seeing thick black smoke billowing into the air with some remarking they could see the fumes as far away as Bluewater Shopping Centre and Waterstone Park in Stone. Pictures show the aftermath of the fire, with just the shell of the building remaining. In an additional clip firefighters can be seen walking around the site and inspecting the damage. The cause of the blaze is not yet known. One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, says the yard had been “locked down” but teenagers were spotted playing on-site previously. They added: “You could see them climbing on to the roof throwing down tiles. They had chairs up on the lower roof.” In 2021, proposals were submitted to demolish the existing buildings on the land once occupied by J&A Builders Ltd, to build 32 homes. The application was recommended for approval in 2023 but did not end up going to planning committee and the application was “disposed of” in November.
