Belgium: Activists lie on ground outside EU Parliament to protest Israeli strikes on Gaza
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM - MAY 21, 2025: Activists staged a protest outside the European Parliament building on Wednesday in Brussels, lying motionless on the ground to condemn Israel’s genocide in the Gaza Strip. The demonstrators symbolically represented Palestinians killed in the onslaught by lying still on the pavement in front of the building. Some Members of the European Parliament (MEP) joined the demonstration, holding signs that read: “Stop the Genocide.” They wore keffiyehs stained with red paint to represent blood. The black and white checkered scarf is a symbol of Palestinian identity and resistance. Demonstrators chanting, "Europe must act," demanded that the EU take concrete steps against Israel. French MEP Manon Aubry, who took part in the protest, told Anadolu that the message they wanted to convey was clear. "There is no time left for words, it’s time for action. We are tired and fed up. We can no longer bear the EU’s inaction on Gaza." She added: "What we did today symbolizes the thousands, even millions of Palestinian lives at risk due to Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to wipe out an entire population." Criticizing the EU's double standards, Aubry said the bloc has passed numerous resolutions in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine but remains largely silent on Gaza. "We’ve been pressuring the EU for over a year, and it’s finally starting to yield some results. The idea of reviewing the EU-Israel trade agreement has been floated, but that’s not enough," she said. "We don’t want a simple revision, we demand a suspension. It is unacceptable to do business with those committing genocide."
