There is nevertheless a difference between fighting courageously for freedom of thought against repressive régimes, as Voltaire did, receiving a beating at the hands of thugs employed by the Cardinal du Rohan, on the one hand, and petulantly demanding the right to appeal to the lowest common denominator in order to sell trashy material to a credulous mob, on the other. There is a great deal of garbage circulating in the name of “freedom of expression”, indeed the problem nowadays is rather that anything goes, largely unchallenged, by the name of “art”, however incontinent its genesis, however base its intentions.
