Israel: Protesters in Tel Aviv call for Gaza ceasefire, return of hostages (2)
..TEL AVIV, ISRAEL - MAY 17, 2025: Hundreds of Israelis gathered on Begin Street in Tel Aviv on Saturday (May 17), demanding a ceasefire in Gaza and the return of hostages held by Hamas. Demonstrators carried photos of the hostages, waved Israeli flags, and held signs criticizing the government’s handling of the conflict. The protesters carried torches and lit fires in various areas in front of the Ministry of Defense building. A scuffle broke out between the demonstrators and the Israeli police as the protesters broke through the barricade and blocked traffic on Begin Street, one of Tel Aviv’s main arteries. In recent days, the Israeli military has intensified its bombardment of Gaza, conducting some of the deadliest attacks since March. Since March 2, Israel has closed Gaza crossings to food, medical supplies, and humanitarian aid, worsening an existing humanitarian crisis in the enclave. Israel's strict restrictions on essential supplies have left over 2 million Palestinians in desperate conditions, which international organizations have described as a deliberate act of collective punishment. More than 53,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in Gaza during Israel's ongoing military offensive since October 2023. Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
