Making 3D Printing More Efficient (3D printing plastic from the source)

How can we make 3D printing more efficient and environmentally friendly? Join Malta Café Scientifique on Wedneday 8 February 2023 at 19:00, Studio B (Music room) at Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta to hear Albert Curmi talk about his research on 3D printing.

Most 3D printers use filaments as raw material for printing. Filaments are processed plastic, usually fed to 3D printers in the form of a cable on a spool. Curmi’s research focuses on pellets, which are the components of these filaments. At the University of Malta's Faculty of Engineering, Curmi investigates how to use pellets as raw material for printing. Skipping the step of transforming the pellets to filaments before using them for printing saves work, is cheaper and is more environmentally friendly. Another advantage is the increased variety of materials that can be used for 3D printing, this means that it is easier to take recycled sources as raw material that can be used directly by the 3D printer.
