It used to be scientist thought hand grip placement etc variations didn't matter...until they tested muscle activation via electromyography. _It confirmed that depending on grip placement hand locations etc u tend to emphasize different region of a muscle (while deemphasizing other part of a muscle) although u r using the same movement u have used to train the same muscle . _Example incline bench press by reversing my grip, the pectorals r a lot more involved than the anterior delts a& triceps. Before electromyography have shown the anterior delts & triceps takes over this movement a lot more than the pecs w/ conventional grip . Incidentally electromyography have shown incline dumbbell flyes to be the most effective exercise for chest. _PS I rarely do barbells(mainly dumbbells) when I do its this or guillotine presses on a flat bench which I add after doing dumbbells. Stuff like this will be covered in the upcoming book.
