Most Americans are taught there are 7 continents but elsewhere it is 5 or 6

Depending on where you live in the world, you may have learned that there are 5, 6, or 7 continents. This is because there are no official criteria for determining continents. While the position of landmasses on continental crust may be used to determine continents, geopolitical factors also affect their delineation. So while in Europe most are taught there is 6 it's not even the same 6 in Eastern and Western Europe.
