Biohacking the solstice of 2020, is a thing — there are methods, meditations, even sciences. Also, when astronomy meets astrology, as in cases of the “great conjunction,” the conversation can be interesting. It’s happening today. The last time Jupiter and Saturn were as close as they are on Winter Solstice 2020 (Dec. 21), was on March 4, 1226. So, about 800 years ago… astrology rendered it important. Of course astrology’s pseudoscience garb has been off-putting to “real scholarship.”

Now the conjunction happens again, but with this important feature: it coincides with the winter solstice. That is to say, with an astrophysical event, historically laden with significance for humanity. We can’t dismiss its meaning as mere mystical speculation or scholarly moments in graduate study rooms. I.e., Jupiter and Saturn align in the sky, therefore blending their energies. AND they do it in the sacred time of winter s0lstice — the shortest day of the year…

Conjunction of science and symbolic realities

On the other hand — sociology, cultural studies and increasingly also other branches of science increasingly support the physical reality and impact of “optical alignments.” Einstein’s gravitational physics — gravity as an effect of spacetime bending — is part of it. Cognitive dynamics, brain science, how elements combine to become objects of percepti0n — there is so much more. New science rescues “conjunctions” from the realms of abstraction and cultural studies.

Parallax, visual proximity, and real force

When astronomers talk about “close” in this regard, they are not talking about physical proximity. It is a matter of visual alignment. These two planets, representing the severe father and the rebellious son (Kronos and Zeus — or Saturn and Jupiter, in Rome-speak) will coincide. That is to say optically, in what astrology calls “the great conjunction” which forms what in effect will appear to be a “double planet.” In distance, in “actual space,” they will still be separated by a hundred million miles or more.

Biohacking and astronomy

Astronomy and astrology seem as separate and distinct as possible – one is astrophysics, the other is, well, depending on your point of view, either a pseudoscience, or the ancient “mother of all sciences.” Astrology ascribes meaning to the positions and movements of celestial bodies. Astronomy observes, classifies, measures, plots.
