Why we need the media: Curated by Margaret Sullivan

These stories all illustrate one of the most important purposes of journalism: Holding powerful people and institutions (including government) accountable. As I wrote in my recently published book, "Ghosting the News: Local Journalism and the Crisis of American Democracy," when news sources wither, bad things are more likely to happen.
