The Battle on Clay

The French Open, which begins Sunday at Roland Garros in Paris, is the premier clay court tennis tournament in the world. It is not the favorite of many players because clay is a notoriously demanding surface, slowing down the ball and allowing defensive-minded players to scramble and make returns. However, it has become a happy place for Rafael Nadal, who is looking to win a record 12th men's title. On the women's side, reigning U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka enters a Grand Slam as the top seed for the first time.
