Photo by @BrianSkerry Soft corals called sea pens, usually found in deep water, and a blue cod appear in shallow waters (24-meters) in Fiordland, New Zealand, where tannin-stained surface water blocks sunlight and tricks these animals into emerging into shallower depths. From my National Geographic magazine story about marine reserves and featured in my new exhibit "Portraits of Planet Ocean" opening at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum September 17th in Washington, DC. @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #underwater #marinereserves #newzealand

Photo by Ian Nichols @fnordfoto, #gorilla. Kingo, silverback and patriarch of his group, sits in the swamps of Mondika and contemplates a leaf before chowing down. This lowland gorilla group lives in Northern Congo and has been habituated to humans by scientific teams over the years. The gorillas were photographed for a story in the Jan 2008 NGM. Gorillas are listed as critically endangered on the IUCN red list. Many organizations are focused on protecting gorillas and if you want to help there are many options, from NGO's to the local zoo.
