The hearing opened with a statement from Capt. Carneysha Mendoza, who sustained chemical facial burns during the Capitol insurrection.
Where Was the National Guard?
Acting Capitol Police Chief Robert Contee followed next, noting his surprise at the reluctance to immediately call in the National Guard for backup.
Then Ted Cruz Got Bored
Annnnd then Sen. Ted Cruz started scrolling on his phone while former Police Chief Steven Sund recalled the violence at the Capitol that day.
"Criminals Came Prepared For War"
The former police chief did not mince words: White supremacist criminals attempted to carry out a military-style, coordinated assault.
Sen. Johnson Argued Otherwise
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), ignoring all evidence, used his time to promote the conspiracy theory that the insurrectionists were actually "provocateurs" and "fake Trump protesters."
And Then There's Sen. Hawley
Josh Hawley (R-MO), the first senator to object to the Electoral College results, calls the claims that Capitol Police leadership appeared to be “complicit” in January 6 insurrection “disrespectful” and “really quite shocking.” Quite rich, huh?
Sen. Klobuchar's Shady Close
Chairwoman Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) closes out the hearing with a nod to Sen. Ron Johnson: “There is clear agreement that this was a planned insurrection, and I think *most* members here very firmly agree with that.”
