World Oceans Day: A Closer Look at the Problems We Face

Tuesday marked 2021's World Oceans Day. About eight million metric tons of plastic is thrown into the ocean every year, according to studies published in scientific journals. By 2050, it is estimated that the weight of plastics in the oceans will surpass the weight of all marine life. Here are snapshots of the pollution and over-fishing problems facing our oceans and seas, the animals that are being harmed, and some of the cleanup efforts currently underway.
