Jimi Hendrix Experience

1950-(via File Photo)-

It is worth noting that the greatness of the psychedelic poster art of this period was not only due to the talents of the artists who created them but also to the vision of the photographers whose work appeared on many of these posters. This is the first appearance of photographs by Herb Green in the Fillmore poster series. They went on to become some of the most famous shots of the Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead ever done. It is also the first appearance of what is known as the "Roeller" alphabet seen on countless posters. This alphabet was designed by the Vienna Seccessionist Alfred Roeller who worked around the turn of the 20th century. It is he mark of the artist Wes Wilson's genius that he did not simply copy Roeller's alphabet but that after using it several times, he modified it substantially and came up with a version of his own. And so, it was on this day 47 years ago, back in 1966, that The Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead played one of their truly Great Shows at The Fillmore Auditorium here in our beautiful City by the Bay, San Francisco! This is BG Fillmore poster number #23 in the old series. There were three authorized printings of this piece and yet another pirate printing done in 1987. No wonder either, it really is a Classic! Totally worthy of Sharing this one! Done and Approved by Professor Poster
