APOD: Milky Way and Stone Tree (2013 Apr 29) Image Credit & Copyright: Daniel López (El Cielo de Canarias) http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap130429.html Explanation: What's that next to the Milky Way? An unusual natural rock formation known as Roque Cinchado or Stone Tree found on the Spanish Canary Island of Tenerife. A famous icon, Roque Cinchado is likely a dense plug of cooled volcanic magma that remains after softer surrounding rock eroded away. Majestically, the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy is visible arcing across the right of the above seven image panoramic mosaic taken during the summer of 2010. On the far right is the Teide volcano complete with a lenticular cloud hovering near its peak. http://www.elcielodecanarias.com/ Starship Asterisk* • APOD Discussion Page http://asterisk.apod.com/discuss_apod.php?date=130429 Starship Asterisk* • On This Day in APOD http://asterisk.apod.com/view_retro.php?date=0429

Outdoor sound sculpture to be ‘played’ by wind. Artist Luke Jerram is preparing an outdoor ‘acoustic pavilion’ called Aeolus, which will be built of hundreds of metal tubes acting as Aeolian harps. Each tube will contain strings which will strike chords inside the structure as the wind passes over them, making the whole structure sing. Visitors to the piece will be able to sit in the center of the structure, and the tubes will act as lighting filters, speckling the interior with shifting light. Jerrem’s work includes a number of environmentally focused projects, including one that amplifies and orchestrates sounds made by plants. (o
