Sebastien Provencher is the great, great, great, great grandfather of Matilde Bruso, wife of Joseph P. Pombrio In June 1661 we find the first mention of our ancestor Sebastien Provencher in a contract that indicated that he was working for Pierre Boucher and that he owed 145 livres 6 deniers for merchandise from Sieur de Grosbois and would repay in three equal installments. Sebastien signed his acceptance by making his mark. On May 15, 1662 Sebastien received 2 arpents of land with water frontage by 40 arpents deep from the Jesuit fathers. The rent was set at an annual fee of 2 bushels of wheat, 2 deniers and a capon to be paid on the Feast of St. Martin (November 11). The contract gave him the right to hunt and fish and specified that he was to build a house there. Seven months later he was ready to settle down with Marguerite Manchon, a "Filles de Roi" a daughter of the king. On January 22, 1663 the notary Louis Laurent drew up a marriage contract and the wedding would take place in the small chapel at Saint-Madeleine. A terrible earthquake struck the area on February 5th which would have affected our ancestors on a very personal level. The Jesuits Relations leave us with this record: "The first tremor and the most severe of all began with a noise similar to thunder; houses moved like trees falling in a storm, with a sound like fire crackling in the attics." Much of the landscape was altered, cliffs leveled, water fronts changed. You can just imagine how much repair must have been needed to their home and properties.
