World record setting experiment brings quantum computing a step closer to reality

Despite recent successes in the field, creating a quantum computer is <i>really</i> hard. For one thing quantum bits in a super positioned state (or qubits, the basic unit of data for quantum computing) have a hard time surviving at room temperature. Typically, these superposition states last for only a …

"We want to fit a supercomputer inside a sugarcube. To do that, we need a paradigm shift in electronics - we need to be motivated by our brain." http://bbc.in/GUd70d Will it be possible to fuel our technical devices with electronic blood? IBM thinks so. The firm says it is learning from nature by building computers fuelled and cooled by a liquid, like our minds. Follow the link above to see our report on the brain-inspired computer and tell us what you think in the comments section below.

APOD: Roll Cloud Over Wisconsin (2013 Aug 08) Image Credit: Megan Hanrahan (Pierre cb), Wikipedia http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/fap/ap130908.html Explanation: What kind of cloud is this? A type of arcus cloud called a roll cloud. These rare long clouds may form near advancing cold fronts. In particular, a downdraft from an advancing storm front can cause moist warm air to rise, cool below its dew point, and so form a cloud. When this happens uniformly along an extended front, a roll cloud may form. Roll clouds may actually have air circulating along the long horizontal axis of the cloud. A roll cloud is not thought to be able to morph into a tornado. Unlike a similar shelf cloud, a roll cloud is completely detached from their parent cumulonimbus cloud. Pictured above, a roll cloud extends far into the distance as a storm approached in 2007 in Racine, Wisconsin, USA. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Roll-Cloud-Racine.jpg Starship Asterisk* • APOD Discussion Page http://asterisk.apod.com/discuss_apod.php?date=130908 #APOD

Hands-on with Wacom's Cintiq Companion tablets

Wacom's drool-worthy new tablets certainly made us lament our lack of artistic skill when we saw them online, but do they pass muster up close and personal? We just got a chance to play with both the Companion Hybrid, the one with Android, as well as the full-fat Companion (the one with Windows 8), …
