Special Forces training, by its very definition, is one of the hardest things you could imagine.

A mix of unimaginable physical fitness, mental strength and sheer grit, there's good reason only a fraction of men make it through the world's hardest courses — from the notorious Navy SEAL BUD/S course to SAS Selection and Parachute Regiment training— and are forged into high-octane super soldiers.

But they all had to start somewhere, right? And, with operations around the world demanding different sets of skills, it takes a special kind of fitness approach to come out fighting while neutralising fat stores.

Below, we take you through a selection of tips, workouts and techniques that Special Forces soldiers, from Navy SEALs to SAS Operatives, deploy to get fighting fit. Lock and load!

British Army AMRAP Workout

Ready to eliminate fat with military-grade precision? This AMRAP — as many rounds as possible — workout is prescribed by Royal Military Academy Sandhurst's Staff Sergeant Maré.

Working through a range of functional exercises including wall balls, thrusters, box pushes and rowing, you'll burn an unholy amount of calories in 30 minutes.

AMRAP in 30 minutes of: 500m row, 25 box-jumps, 50 wall balls (9kg at 10ft), 50 slam balls, thrusters (40kg), 50m box push

"The Hardest Guy In The Yard"

"It’s not for the faint of heart, but it has an incredible ability to give you strength, speed and insane endurance," explains Gym Jones' Bobby Maximus, who designed the workout for his Special Forces clients.

"Those are all skills that make you harder to take down. That’s why I’d do it when I was fighting in the UFC, and why I give it to the Special Forces soldiers that I train at Gym Jones, where I’m the general manager."

Promising strength, speed and endurance, all this workout requires is the ability to do a burpee.

Here's how it works:

1. Stand in one corner of a room. Do 20 burpees.

2. Now run to another corner of the room and do 19 burpees. Run to another corner and do 18.

3. Repeat the pattern until you reach 1 burpee. Rest only as needed.

The GIGN Bodyweight Workout

Comprising of 1700 reps of bodyweight moves and 4km of running, this five-round workout is gruelling to say the least. GIGN, the elite police tactical unit of the French National Gendarmerie, trains for counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, surveillance and much more. All of which demands serious physical fitness, and this workout delivers exactly that.

The Royal Marines' Post-PRMC Physical Training Test

Designed to test a Royal Marine's physical fitness after passing through, this circuit focuses on health, mental robustness and is designed to demonstrate a sky-high level of fitness.

"Physical fitness within the Royal Marines is one of the key foundations within Corps life and a personal attribute which directly influences operational effectiveness," explains the Royal Marines workout guide.

"Royal Marines recruit training is physically and mentally demanding, pushing each man that attempts it to their absolute limits. This is because of the extreme and highly arduous situations a Royal Marines Commando may find himself in."

For time: 1.5 mile run, 2 minutes of press-ups, 2 minutes of sit-ups at best effort and repeat. Then, 40 pull-ups conducted in sets of five.
