HEARTBURN/GERD Through many years of poor eating habits, the digestive system gets compromised, causing food indigestion and heartburn (GERD). If you suffer from heartburn, taking small sips of 1 tsp apple cider vinegar (acv) in a glass of 3-4oz water may help. It may cause a burning sensation when you swallow it, but after about 20 minutes, you should feel relief. Contrary to what most people think, it's not too much acid that causes a reflux, but it's too little. When you have too little stomach acid, food doesn't get properly digested (indigestion) and stays in the stomach too long, pushing up into the esophagus. The esophagus valve needs to sense that there is acid in the stomach to stay closed. In the case of insufficient acid, it relaxes, causing a reflux. If you're prone to heartburn, FOR PREVENTION: - Avoid antacids - Inculcate good eating habits - Eat/drink more fruits and vegetables - Drink at least 2-3 liters/quarts of water daily - Supplement with high quality probiotics - Drink before meals: 1 or 2 tsp apple cider vinegar diluted in 3-4oz water.
