Radiohead & Hans Zimmer - (ocean) bloom | [full isolation]

Tom Brady

Metric - Fantasies (70/100) Metallic bangs coupled with heavy synths and minty vocals set the scene for Metric's 4th LP. The first words of the record "I tremble" are echoed off into isolation. By the 1:30min mark, bright guitar strums summon sunshine upon the fragile lyrics. Sharp guitars provide the lightning and sonorous drums provide the thunder. I looped this merciless opening track for 30mins straight. I dare anyone to find a better song title than "Help, I'm Alive". In many tracks, Emily Haines' profound and vulnerable voice parallels the sentiment behind the characteristic airy synths of the album ("Sick Muse"). The record thrives when there is a balance between lyric centered choruses and power chord verses while the drums deliver powerful punches. There are some tracks that deviate from this orchestration ("Twilight Galaxy"), however, that only makes the good singles even more epic during the album's listening experience ("Gold Guns Girls" and "Stadium Love"). Perfectly timed, this album is a window into the rise of indie and synth pop towards the end of the first decade of the 2000's. This is indie pop at its best. Sister album: It's Blitz! - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
