That iPhone in your hands? It’s been compromised by the National Security Agency through its SIM card, and government spies can access your phone through a backdoor installed on it without even needing a court order.<p>Sound scary? It is, and it’s the latest bombshell to be dropped by American …

Photograph by @paulnicklen When being chased by Leopard Seals, Emperor Penguins reach such great velocities underwater and consequently great heights when exiting the frigid Ross Sea that it looks like they are truly trying to fly. However, they are just throwing their flippers out for balance. They hit the sea ice with such force that often, these 60 to 90 pound birds knock the air out of themselves. They quickly shake it off and begin their 10 mile hike back to the colony to feed their awaiting chicks. Please follow me this week on @paulnicklen as I post a series of my favorite polar wildlife species #wildlife #nature @ElPlanetaPhoto #gratitude #penguins #beauty @natgeocreative @thephotosociety

Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) - During last months @NatGeo photographers seminar in DC, fellow NGM photographer @BrianSkerry told me that there is still a staggering 95% of the underwater world that remains unexplored. A huge volume of ocean left to examine and make new discoveries. Underground however, nobody knows what percentage of caverns remain unexplored, as we cannot see them from the surface. Pictured above, deep below ground in China’s Wulong County, a cave explorer swims into the unknown.

Happy New Year! To welcome the year of the goat, I’d like to share this view of The Great Wall of China the morning after a rare winter snow fall. I was in Yunnan Province when I received word of the snow, and drove like mad to the nearest airport, caught a redeye to Beijing, and climbed the wall before sunrise. 90% of photography is being in the right place at the right time. Share the view with a friend and tag @geosteinmetz on assignment for National Geographic magazine.
