Although the evening started out with a shower, the clouds dissipated just enough for a brief viewing of the Milky Way and different constellations during the second and final New Moon trip to Whittaker this year. The next night train, the first of two Lunar Express trips this year, will depart Cass at 8pm on August 20th and September 19th for Bald Knob. The 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park is less than two weeks away! Anniversary Special to Whittaker Station On Saturday, June 15th at 10:30 am, Cass Scenic Railroad Shay #4 will depart the Cass depot for Whittaker Station. This special trip will take place 50 years to the day and hour of the very first tourist run in 1963, which was also pulled by Shay #4! To commemorate the occasion, Shay #4 will wear special lettering for the Cass, Greenbrier, Cheat & Bald Knob Scenic Railroad! This unique scheme was only worn by Shay #4 and #1 during special trips of the railroad in 1961. A photo runby opportunity will occur at Whittaker Station allowing for photographers and videographers to capture images of Shay #4 tackling the grade into Whittaker. Be sure to arrive early to take photos of #4 sitting at the Cass depot in the nice morning light! This historic trip is limited to 240 passengers and ticket prices are $21 for adults, $16 for children 5-12, children under 5 are free. Advance reservations are required and can be made by calling (304) 456-4300. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of Cass Scenic Railroad history as we relive the past and create new memories for the future.

For the final new Casshews image I will be adding before the 50th Anniversary of the park, here is a shot of Shay #5 high on the mountain sometime during 1958. This was the final year Shay #5 operated for Mower Lumber, as it required a complete overhaul prior to entering Cass Scenic RR service in May 1965.
