Michal Janowski’s mixed-media artworks are tinged with a sense of diabolical play. Child-like Pan figures haunt the works with their shadowy presence. Janowski seamlessly merges the refined and expressionistic elements, overlapping abstract markings and clean-cut outlines. Fascinated by the lasciviousness bred in cultural environments that repress sexuality, Barcelona-based duo Crajes created a new body of work for their upcoming solo show, “Ingemisco, tanquam reus, culpa rubet vultus meus; supplicanti parce, Deus.” The lengthy Latin title translates to “I groan, as one guilty, my face reddens in guilt: Spare the supplicating one, God” — a prayer that becomes ironic when one views the fetishistic, gag-like ornaments and supple nude bodies in the oils and pen-and-ink works in the show. Longtime comic book fans, Crajes paint visual elements culled from the European Baroque with a painting style that evokes Japanese Pop Art. Take a look at a sneak peek of their solo show before it opens at Galeria N2 on our site now!
