At the moment, I've become obsessed with Nellie Bly (1864-1922), an investigative journalist whose birthday is this month. Ms. Bly wrote about the plight of female factory workers, served as a foreign correspondent in Mexico, and pretended to be insane so she could write a book exposing conditions in a 19th century madhouse. In 1890, she completed a 72 day, around the world journey in homage to Jules Verne. Ms. Bly made this journey unaccompanied by a man, and set a new world record for that time.
