@krivicmatjaz Hidden in the the Haraz mountains of Yemen, a number of villages embelish the terraced slopes. Their imposing architecture meets two needs, defending the villagers while leaving plenty of space for crops. The area is known as one of the best regions to grow khat, a plant, known for its stimulating effects (classified by WHO as a light drug) and most Yemeni men can’t imagine life without chewing it every day. Each village is built like a castle; the houses themselves form the wall, equipped with one or two easily defensible doors. People living in them have no idea about the age of their impressive homes, but they estimate them older than 600 years. The fog rising from the valley towards the village of Shugruf makes this fairy tale settlement even more mystical. UrbaniStan is a street photography project that explores the urban environment of the developing world. The project aims to demonstrate that the term ‘urban’ in the developing world does not necessarily mean 'modern', and aims to draw the attention of the general public to the slowly declining social values that are collapsing under the increasing pressures of modernisation. The main focus of the project is to search and explore the points where people and communities develop and entwine with the urbanity of humanity.
