"Saturday Night Live," or "SNL," as it's more commonly called now, began in 1975 as a "pioneering concept" meant to "attract 18 to 34-year-old viewers" during the relatively unpopular Saturday night programming slot (via Far Out). The outlet claims that the now-popular sketch show operated "on the periphery of culture" until 1978 when mainstream viewers began to pay it more attention.
