What is Orange Shirt Day?

Every September 30, Canadian kids wear orange shirts to school, but it's not a fashion statement. Orange Shirt Day is designed to educate people about the residential schools system, which existed in Canada between 1876 and 1996. Children were forcibly taken from their parents and educated in boarding schools, an abusive system that was created to "kill the Indian in the child."
