Disturbances in sleep is one of the primary symptoms of major depression, and scientists at the University of Washington Medicine Sleep Center in Seattle have found new links between the two. To look at links between genetic risk factors for depression and the environment, the researchers studied 1788 adult twins and found that those who slept excessively long or short amounts each night had a significantly increased risk of developing depression. A separate study in the same issue of the journal Sleep, of 4175 adolescents revealed a reciprocal effect between depression and short sleep. Short sleep increased the risk of developing depression, and the onset of major depression was associated with short sleep. The researchers believe that abnormal sleeping patterns may activate genes related to major depression, and have hypothesized that improving sleep may also improve depression symptoms and make psychotherapy more effective.
