COLD AND ALLERGY PROTECTION JUICE Share | Like | Comment l Repost APPLES: Among the many AMAZING health benefits of the often-overlooked apple, Red apples contain an antioxidant called quercetin. Recent studies have found that quercetin boosts and strengthens your immune system, especially when you're stressed out. This is so important, because a weak immune system makes us vulnerable to both colds AND allergies. Another great benefit? Research has been showing that drinking apple juice could keep Alzheimer’s away and fight the effects of aging on the brain. Apple juice increases the levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which is important for brain function and health. GINGER: Also a powerhouse in the plant food world, ginger has been used for thousands of years as a natural treatment for colds and flu. The University of Maryland Medical Center found that 1-2 tbsp. of freshly shredded ginger root in hot water, or juiced, two to three times a day, is extremely preventive against both colds and flu. Ginger also helps to expand your lungs and loosen up phlegm, which assists people with allergy symptoms. Ginger is strengthening to the immune system, decreases bacterial infections in the stomach, and helps fight a cough and throat irritation. Consuming about a tablespoon or two of ginger DAILY can also help prevent potential risk of a stroke by inhibiting fatty deposits from the arteries. CARROT JUICE: Carrot juice deserves it own post, it truly is the king of juices! Carrot juice is the richest source of vitamin A and a good supply of vitamins B, C, D, E, G, and K, all of which strengthen the immune system. From: RawganicVegan

AVOCADOS: PERHAPS THE WORLD'S MOST PERFECT FOOD! Share | Like | Comment l Repost Avocado Health Benefits: Is This the World’s Most Perfect Food? Did You Know that the avocado has been called the world’s most perfect food and has many health benefits? It has achieved this distinction because many nutritionists claim it not only contains everything a person needs to survive — but it has also been found to contribute to the prevention and control of Alzheimer’s, cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other health conditions. The avocado, also called the alligator pear, is a high-fiber, sodium- and cholesterol-free food that provides nearly 20 essential nutrients, including fiber, is rich in healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (such as omega-3 fatty acids), vitamins A, C, D, E, K and the B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12 and folate) — as well as potassium. Foods naturally rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as avocados, are widely acknowledged as the secret to a healthy heart, a brilliant brain and eagle eyes. Here Are Just a Few Avocado Health Benefits That Its Nutritional Profile Provides: Monounsaturated Fats — These types of fats help control triglycerides in the bloodstream, lower blood cholesterol and control diabetes. Folate — This water-soluble B vitamin promotes healthy cell and tissue development. According to the National Institute of Health’s Office of Dietary Supplements, “This is especially important during periods of rapid cell division and growth such as infancy and pregnancy. Folate is also essential for metabolism of homocysteine and helps maintain normal levels of this amino acid.” Lutein — This is a carotenoid (a natural pigment) that protects against cataracts and certain types of cancer, and reduces the risk of macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in adults 65 years of age and older. Avocados contain 3 or more times as much lutein as found in other common vegetables and fruits. Oleic acid and Potassium — Both of these nutrients also help in lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of high blood pressure. Read more: Via The Farmacy

WHY KALE IS SO AWESOME! Share | Like | Comment l Repost Did you know? Per calorie kale has more calcium than milk and more iron than beef (though you won’t hear that from the dairy or meat industry). In addition: --1 cup of kale has 3 ½ times your daily beta-carotene needs and plenty of vitamin C to help boost that gorgeous glow. --Kale also contains a host of anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory flavonols, such as quercetin, to help defend your body from the stresses of modern life. --Kale provides a dietary source of alpha-lipoic acid, which helps regenerate other anti-oxidants like vitamin C and Glutathione. --Kale’s fibre supports a healthy digestive tract to help keep digestion-related inflammation at bay. --Sulfur-based glucosinolates in kale help to support the natural detoxification pathways in the liver. Put kale in a salad, in a green smoothie, or eat it as a simple, healthy alternative to movie popcorn! :) That's what I like to do! Kale chips are another GREAT way to incorporate this lovely green into your diet: Recipe for Kale Chips Ingredients 1 head kale, washed and thoroughly dried 2 tablespoons olive oil Sea salt, for sprinkling Directions Remove the ribs from the kale and cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces. Lay on a tex-flex sheet and toss with the olive oil and salt. Dehydrate overnight (about 8 hrs) or until crisp. Turn the leaves over and dehydrate for 1-2 more hours. Serve as finger food. THE INCREDIBLE BENEFITS OF BEETS Share | Like | Comment l Repost A single serving of beets can boost your energy and lower your blood pressure. Eating beets long-term can help you fight cancer, reduce arthritic pain, and lose weight, as well as assisting in a number of other health areas. Many people don’t like beets or consider it only a special occasion dish, but we think this powerfood should be on your plate every day. 8 Healthy Reasons to Eat Beets: 1. Weight Loss Beets taste sweet, but a cup of cooked beet contains only 60 calories and is full of fiber. This is a perfect food for weight management. The sugars in beets are smart carbs, since they come in a natural whole food form. Unlike white sugar, the beet calories come with a lot of nutrients and phytochemicals. 2. Brain and Energy Boost Beets are high in natural nitrates, which are converted to nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide is known to expand the walls of blood vessels so you can enjoy more oxygen, more nutrients, and more energy. Studies have shown nitric oxide to increase the efficiency of the mitochondria (your energy powerhouses). The results of these studies were impressive. A single small serving (70 ml) of beetroot juice reduced resting blood pressure by 2%. A single small serving increased the length of time professional divers could hold their breath by 11%. Cyclists who drank a single larger serving (500 ml) of beetroot juice were able to ride up to 20% longer. 3. Nature’s Viagra One of the first known uses of beets was by the ancient Romans, who used them medicinally as an aphrodisiac. Many plants have been considered an aphrodisiac by some culture at some time, but in this case it may be more than just wishful thinking. As noted above, beets can increase blood flow due to their nitrates. Increased blood flow to the genital areas is one of the mechanisms Viagra and other pharmaceuticals create their effects. Beets also contain high amounts of boron, which is directly related to the production of human sex hormones. Read more: Photo: The Farmacy
