Earth Life Likely Came from Mars, Study Suggests

We may all be Martians.<p>Evidence is building that Earth life originated on Mars and was brought to this planet aboard a meteorite, said biochemist …

The diversity of galaxies in the early universe was as varied as the many galaxy types seen today, a massive survey of Hubble Space Telescope photos reveals. This image shows "slices" of the Universe at different times throughout its history (present day, and at 4 and 11 billion years ago).

The solar wind streams plasma and particles from the sun out into space. But, what causes this stream, and how does it affect Earth? Learn all about the solar wind here: This is an artist's concept of the Earth's global magnetic field, with the bow shock. Many energetic particles in the solar wind, represented in gold, are deflected by Earth's magnetic "shield".

This hauntingly beautiful cosmic region, captured by Adam Block (, known as Sh2-239, lies near the southern end of the constellation Taurus, more than 400 light-years away.

What do you see? This image shows gas released by a dying star racing across space at more than 600,000 miles an hour, forming the delicate shape of a celestial butterfly, also known as NGC 6302 or the Bug Nebula.

This stunning new portrait of the Milky Way's neighbor, Andromeda, shows our twin galaxy in a whole new light thanks to a new instrument on Japan's Subaru telescope at the summit of Hawaii's Mauna Kea. "This first image from HSC is truly exciting," said Masahiro Takada. "We can now start the long-awaited, largest-ever galaxy survey for understanding the evolutionary history and fate of the expanding universe."

Spacecraft Sees Giant 'Hole' In the Sun (Video)

A space telescope aimed at the sun has spotted a gigantic hole in the solar atmosphere — a dark spot that covers nearly a quarter of our closest …

Photographer Christopher Georgia captured this amazing image of the Milky Way as a meteor shot across the sky near Cannon Mountain Observatory in Franconia, N.H. "Just as I was about to break down my equipment and head out, one of the brightest fireballs I had seen all night lit up the sky just to the left of the Milky Way," wrote Georgia in an email.

"Having looked back at Earth from outer space, I have seen just how fragile our home planet is — and I'm committed to doing everything I can to help protect it," NASA chief Charles Bolden said in response to President Obama's recent climate initiative. Bolden highlighted some of the 17 missions in NASA's Earth Science program that are currently monitoring the Earth's atmosphere, oceans, weather and climate from a remote perch in space to study and predict changes over time.

Reflection nebula vdB 123 shines bright in this photo by Adam Block from the Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter. vdB 123 is one of 158 reflection nebulas catalogued by Canadian astronomer Sidney van den Bergh.
