Today's PoliticOz: The New Senate http://themo.io/17Cajj8 The Senate vote counting is now complete. There may be a recount in Western Australia, at the request of Greens senator Scott Ludlam following his narrow defeat. But barring any changes, the new Senate – which will sit from July 1, 2014 – will look like this: Coalition 33, Labor 26, Greens 9, Palmer United Party 3, Xenophon 1, Democratic Labor Party 1, Liberal Democratic Party 1, Family First 1, Motoring Enthusiasts 1. This means, in a nutshell, that Palmer United senators will hold the balance of power in their own right. They will have the casting vote on every piece of legislation that is opposed by the Greens and Labor. But the Coalition will also need the votes of 3 of the remaining 5 micro-party senators. That Palmer United senators will decide on legislation that directly benefits Palmer's companies – such as the rescinding of the mining and carbon taxes, along with environmental regulation – will be contentious. But this will be just one of many intriguing subplots closely watched when the new parliament sits. Here's another: No-one knows how new Palmer United senator Jacqui Lambie (Tasmania) is going to vote. For example, she doesn't support the scrapping of the carbon tax. Despite it being Palmer United policy. Her message to Tony Abbott is this: "If he thinks Pauline Hanson was a pain in his rear-end in the past, I can assure you he hasn't come up against Jacqui Lambie yet." No doubt Clive Palmer has already registered her singular outlook. And if/when Coalition negotiators win her vote on a contentious piece of legislation, they can look forward to weighing it against the competing demands of the other independent-minded senators. Expect some strange deals.
