skunkbear: It’s been pretty cold out there, and three of the Great Lakes are almost completely frozen over! I put together this GIF of Erie freezing with images from a pair of satellites. As I was searching for cloudless shots of Erie, I saw some other striking images: Clouds forming over a chilly Lake Superior and streaming south. The snowy swath across the upper Mississippi - it almost looks painted on. Ice forming on Lake Huron. You can explore all the satellite images here. Image credit: Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC), University of Wisconsin-Madison. It never ceases to blow my mind that such large bodies of water can completely freeze over. I am so glad I don’t live in that Arctic hell. I’d never make it. Speaking of frozen lakes, did you know that some people used to think that’s where birds spent the winter? Yeah. Under the ice. MinuteEarth has the crazy story (plus a look at what actually happens): Finally, have you ever wondered what happens to all those fish underneath that frozen lake? How do they survive those frigid months without becoming fishy icicles? Read this wonderful piece from the New York Times by biologist Sean B. Carroll to learn all about the amazing evolution of antifreeze proteins.
