Christmas in Kolkata

Photograph by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz Dhows loaded with fishermen head out from Quero Niuni in the Quirimbas Archipelago of #Mozambique. Hundreds of fishermen and their families have set up temporary residence on this islet of sand only a few hundred meters long. They are here to gain access to one of the last outer reefs in the #Quirimbas with large fish, as most of the coastal villages have taken all but the smallest fish. Quero Niuni has no water, and all drinking water comes from the mainland by sailboat, costing equivalent of $2 per 20 liter container, in a country where the average unskilled wage is about $4/ day. Photo by @argonautphoto (Aaron Huey) of the the Iron Creek #wolfpack in #DenaliNationalPark, Alaska. This pack is a single family of 7 wolves. The parents are out of frame and wearing some of the tracking collars used by the National Forest Service to study the dozen or so packs in the Park. More b-roll of wolves from planes from this @natgeo magazine assignment next week both here and at @argonautphoto.

A #train heads up through the hill country of #SriLanka, where some of the finest #tea in the world is grown at an elevation exceeding 4,000 feet. @delhigraz photographed the country’s interior, capturing the green hills of tropical plantations. #regram from @nytimestravel.

#MesaArch at #Canyonlands #NationalPark is one of the most photographed arches in southeast #Utah. This location is especially popular at #sunrise, when groups of photographers often lay in wait for the glow of sunrise on the bottom of the arch. Even with the crowds, it’s an incredible experience. #Yemen, the poorest country in the #MiddleEast, was once described as the Happy Arabia. Now it’s a war-torn land, often met with bombings and rebellions. Amid all the war and politics, it’s easy to lose sight of the actual place — a breathtakingly #beautiful country rich with history. Here, a Yemeni man stands atop the #JebelShugruf village in the #Haraz mountains. Click the link in our profile to see more photographs. (Image: Corbis, Arne Hodalic)
