@clarkegiles here -traveling thru Bolivia this week posting as I go. Here's a shot that took some getting! The very old pre-Incan town below is called Copacabana and it sits on the Lake Titicaca lakeshore -nestled between Mount Calvario and Mount Nino Calvario - (above the town in the image). This is the original Copacabana - actually lending its name to the beach in Rio. The name derives from the Aymara words 'Kota Kawana' meaning 'View of the Lake' and a place that was deeply revered by the Inca who built many shrines to sun gods on nearby Isla del Sol. Later, the Spanish catholic leaders recognized this place as a holy site and built the imposing Chapel of the Virgin in town and turned it into a pilgrimage site. This picture was taken during one of the many rests we took while walking to the top of Mount Calvario to take in the impressive view. The early morning climb took us to well over 14,000ft -!! The town has become very popular recently as only 90kms from La Paz -with a new road close to completion. #Bolivia #altitude #Smithsonian #travels.
