Photo by Ian Nichols @fnordfoto | Trientalis borealis, starflower, a North American perennial. It's enjoying the dappled light near a stream. The stalk has a whorl of 4 to 9 leaves and a white flower, making it easy to spot on the forest floor. The botany course @ mountain lake biological station w/ Dr. Murrell has been amazing. @natgeo @thephotosociety #mlbs #botany #virginia #vatech #uva #education #science #mountainlake #flower #forest #jmu

Nearly 2 billion dollars will be spent this week on flowers to celebrate St. Valentine's Day. This is a Sabot de Venus, this orchid traps bees & flies in its nectar making then crawl out after the nectar bath past the pollen that attaches to their backs. They then fly off to the next flower, pollinating as they go. The story of the evolution of flowers is a fascinating one. Several groups of #extinct gymnosperms, particularly seed ferns, have been proposed as the ancestors of flowering plants but there is no continuous fossil evidence showing exactly how flowers evolved. The apparently sudden appearance of relatively modern flowers in the fossil record posed such a problem for the theory of evolution that it was called an "abominable mystery" by Charles #Darwin. Recently discovered angiosperm fossils such as Archaefructus, along with further discoveries of fossil gymnosperms, suggest how angiosperm characteristics may have been acquired in a series of steps. I photographed this flower @KewGardens for a story about #CharlesDarwin for the @natgeo "Was Darwin Wrong? (no, by the way). @robertclarkphoto @thephotosociety @instituteartist

Photo by @TimLaman shot while on assignment for @NatGeo in the Cape York Peninsula, Australia. Rare beauty… A Golden-shouldered Parrot comes in for a landing at its nest in the side of a termite mound. This amazingly colored bird is a highly endangered species with only about 300 breeding pairs remaining on earth. It is found only in the Cape York Peninsula, and makes its nest only in cavities it carves out of termite mounds.
