Jump at Your Opportunities When you're a child your parents tell you "you can be anything you want when you grow up, the world is yours for the taking". As you grow older you realize life is hard. Becoming an Astronaut is not as easy as you once imagined. You decide it's time to be a realist (or as I like to say "a pessimist in denial") and you say to yourself "this probably isn't the most realistic dream" and you move on. You need to do something with your life, so off to college you go or you get a job doing something you can tolerate. Someday when I have children if I can instill one thing in them it will be this; "You can be anything you want when you grow up, the world is yours for the taking" Your dreams are 100% true, realistic, and obtainable IF you believe in yourself and jump!" It won't be easy though by any stretch of the imagination. Some days will even suck and you will want to quit. However if you don't quit and you jump at opportunities you will someday make it. Jumping at opportunities is the key though. But you will need to want it so bad, do your absolute best, fail and get back up time and time again. You've got to always keep the dream alive even when you’re not seemingly getting any closer. Life is tricky and there are no black and white answers or straight paths but life is filled with opportunities IF you jump. Most opportunities are hidden and uncertain but they are there if you look hard enough and put yourself in a position to create them. You just need to be open minded enough to recognize them and then despite your fears JUMP! Take every opportunity you can! Do whatever it takes and don't be afraid of change and new things! If you do this one day you will take a minute to stop and look around and you just might realize you've reached the mountain top. When I was 19 I started my pond business. From the very beginning I told myself "I am one of the best pond builders in the world!” It didn't matter to me at the time if it was true or not. I was going to say it to myself and anyone that would listen until I achieved it. I was determined and I took every opportunity to make that dream a reality. I would throw myself into uncomfortable territory. My first time flying alone anywhere was my first Pondemonium. I used a credit card because I couldn't afford it otherwise. I didn't know a single person in the pond world besides my distributor and my Aquascape salesperson, Fred Pape. But I figured the best pond builders in the world were going to Pondemonium so that's where I needed to be too. When I got there I had to break out of my shell and spark conversations with people I had never met. I'd sit at a table and just start asking questions. I would take every opportunity that came my way and if I couldn't find an opportunity I would do my best to make one. In 2010 I took a leap and asked the man, the myth, the legend-- Brian Helfrich --Aquascapes Director of Chicagoland Construction if I could come work with his crew. I thought to be the best I need to get in the trenches and rub elbows with THE BEST. So for a month I worked for free for Aquascape and lived in one of the guest rooms at Aqualand. I loved every learn-able minute of it! When I returned home I decided to put my pond dreams on pause and jumped at a different sort of opportunity that was close to my heart. I decided to pursue my biggest childhood dream of fighting for my country. I could feel my window of opportunity closing the older I got so I joined the Infantry and volunteered to deploy to Afghanistan. In April 2012 I came home having fulfilled a dream of mine with not only thankfully all my fingers and toes but a new found confidence in myself. I took a whole different kind of jump and decided to ask out, the most beautiful girl I could think of from my high school. How exactly do you ask out a girl you have never even talked to before; Facebook of course! After being shot at on foreign soil your perspective on what's hard and what's easy changes a little. Still I sweated it out for six days until one Sarah Belenger said...YES! We've been together pretty much ever since. And this September I'm honored to say she will become Mrs. Sarah Cutroni. Sometimes leaps of faith change your entire life for the better! I jumped back into the pond business. Then in October 2013, Greg Wittstock , The Pond Guy himself asked me if I would come back to Aquascape to help them wrap up the season. I learned Aquascape had begun filming their very own Reality TV show about their exploits as pond builders and could use any help they could get. I leapt again! A few weeks into my stay three of the five laborers on the construction crew quit without notice. It was not a good situation to say the least but amongst the craziness there were a lot of opportunities. All that talk about being one of the best pond builders in the world came down to put up or shut up. Aquascape had 20 jobs on the books to finish before the snow started to fly and they were fully consumed with shooting their show. Overnight I went from being an extra pair of hands to leading the number one pond construction team in the world! Talk about a jump! While Greg, Brian and Ed Beaulieu, along with their newest team member Chris Hanson built ponds for the TV show I tackled the jobs on their books. I took the two remaining laborers and went out and completed 18 of the 20 jobs on the schedule while even helping with a few of the TV builds for good measure. When the crew quit it was sink or swim. All I knew was my friends needed help and I jumped at the opportunity to be the one to help them! At the end of it all Greg, Ed, and Brian asked me to come to Aquascape and be a Construction Foreman leading the team full time. I was floored. It was no easy decision to turn my business over to my father to run but I jumped at yet another unexpected opportunity. Today my amazing fiancée Sarah and I are saying goodbye to our family and friends. We are packing up our lives and taking the biggest jump of our lives and moving from the only town either of us has ever lived to relocate to a state half way across the country. We are scared but excited at where this latest leap will take us. You never fully know the consequences of your decisions but I'm determined to look back on my life and say I have no regret for not taking the opportunities life gave me. And regardless of the outcome, by working at Aquascape I will be able to say with certainty that at 26 years old I am realizing that crazy dream I had for myself when I started my business. I AM BECOMING ONE OF THE BEST POND BUILDERS IN THE WORLD! Looking back at the jumps I’ve taken: • I was afraid to start my own business but I took a leap of faith and did. • I was worried my window to serve my country was closing so I jumped through it. • I went out on a limb with the most beautiful girl I had ever seen and soon she will be my wife. And finally I envisioned being the best before I was the best and today I'm part of a team that's the best in the world at what they do. And none of it would have happened if I didn't jump! This is Tim, The Pond Doctor. The pond water is getting close to the 50 degree mark and we all need to stop feeding our koi for the year. Just like in the picture, they will beg for you to feed them.... and they will play on your heart strings. By stopping to feed them now, It will help them to survive through the cold winter months.
