O modelo padrão da física de partículas foi desenvolvido entre 1970 e 1973, e é uma teoria que descreve as forças fundamentais forte, fraca e eletromagnética, bem como as partículas fundamentais que constituem toda a matéria.. Para demonstrar sua importância, quase todos os testes experimentais das três forças descritas pelo modelo padrão concordaram com as suas predições. Entretanto, o modelo padrão não é uma teoria completa das interações fundamentais, primeiramente porque não descreve a gravidade. FÉRMIONS Os férmions são partículas de spin semi-inteiro (1/2, 3/2, 5/2). São as partículas que compõe a matéria e antimatéria propriamente ditas. Férmios dividem-se em dois tipos: Quarks e Léptons. QUARKS Quarks são a os componentes da maior parte da matéria que vemos em nossa volta e dão origem aos prótons, nêutrons e mésons. Os quarks dividem-se em seis tipos: Up (para cima) – É o mais leve dos quarks. Cada próton possui dois up em seu interior. Cada nêutron, possui um. Down (para baixo) – Faz dupla com o up na constituição da matéria. Cada próton tem um down e cada nêutron, dois. Charm (charme) – Maior que o up e o down, só aparece em aceleradores de partículas, por um milionésimo de milionésimo de segundo. Strange (estranho) – Par do charm, é também pesado demais para se manter inteiro na natureza. Só existiu nos primeiros momentos da criação do Universo. Top (topo) – O mais pesado dos quarks, tem massa igual à de um átomo de ouro. Nos aceleradores, sobrevive por apenas 0,0000000000000000000001 segundo . Bottom (fundo) – Também é pesado demais para existir hoje. Nos aceleradores, dura apenas um milionésimo de milionésimo de segundo. LÉPTONS Existem seis tipos de léptons, três dos quais possuem carga elétrica e três que não. Eles parecem ser partículas puntiformes sem estrutura interna. O lépton mais conhecido é o elétron. Os outros dois léptons são o múon e o tau, que são carregados como os elétrons mas têm muito mais massa. Os outros léptons são os três tipos de neutrinos (neutrino do elétron, neutrino do múon e neutrino do tau). Eles não possuem carga, têm massa pequena e são difíceis de serem encontrados pois não interagem com a matéria. BÓSONS O bósons são partículas mediadoras de forças e que possui spin inteiro (0,1,2). Eles tem este nome em homenagem ao físico indiano Satyendra Nath Bose. Entre eles estão o fóton, bóson Z, o bóson W, o glúon, e o bóson de Higgs. O fóton é a partícula mediadora da força eletromagnética e também é o quantum da radiação eletromagnética (incluindo a luz). O fóton não possui massa Os bósons Z e W são mediadores da força nuclear fraca, que é responsável pelo decaimento radioativo de quarks e léptons pesados em quarks e léptons mais leves. Os glúons são mediadores da força nuclear forte, que é responsável por manter o núcleo do átomo estável. Ela funciona como uma espécie de “cola” que mantém prótons e nêutrons unidos. O bóson de Higgs é o mediador de massas. O bóson de Higgs foi predito primeiramente em 1964 pelo físico britânico Peter Higgs, trabalhando as ideias de Philip Anderson. A teoria de Higgs foi confirmada somente no ano de 2012 com os experimentos no LHC (Large Hadrons Colisor).
