The First Thanksgiving: Fact vs Fiction

I recently discovered that I am a descendant of John Howland, a passenger on the Mayflower and founding colonist, and this sparked an interest in the true history of the first colonists and the native Wampanoag. As you will read in this collection, much of the American origin story is a legend. In fact, the holiday was declared in 1863 by Abraham Lincoln in an attempt to heal a nation in the throes of the Civil War with no mention of early colonists or Native Americans.
