The ever-beating grid of New York City, captured by the extraordinarily talented @vincentlaforet. More photos via the link in our profile.

Today would have been #JanisJoplin’s birthday. She’s pictured here in her San Francisco apartment on Lyon Street in 1967, in a photo by her friend @JimMarshallPhoto, who has taken some of the most iconic photographs of her. “In June 1966, this girl in a thin, sleeveless cotton blouse and shorts, with bad skin and her hair piled on her head in a bun, showed up where Big Brother were rehearsing at Kelley/Mouse Studios. The band was not immediately impressed, but they worked her into the act and gave her a microphone on the side of the stage at the Avalon that next weekend. She did a few numbers. The band members talked afterward about whether to keep her on not. They decided to keep her.” From ‘The Haight: Love, Rock, and Revolution’ by Joel Selvin, photos by Jim Marshall. © Jim Marshall Photography
